The lesson 'The First Woman Jawan Shanti Tigga' is a story of Shanti Tigga, a widower  with 2 children at the age of 35 years who broke a great barrier in the Indian Army by out performing her male counterparts in the physical tests and becoming the first female jawan to join  969 Railway Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army. She made a history at the age of 35. Tigga has earned the distinction of being the first lady jawan in the 1.3 million defence forces.

Shanti Tigga was an inspiration and motivation to many woman in India. She became the first female jawan to be recruited into Indian Army. A great barrier broke in the Indian Army with a woman a mother who became the first woman jawan. Shanti Tigga a widow and a mother of two first got job in Railway on compassionate ground as a widow. After joining railways she choose to join Indian Army. Her level of fitness and skill was considered far superior to her male counter parts in army. She was awarded the title of ‘Best Trainee’ during her training at the recruitment camp. Unfortunately her life was brought to an abrupt end and she was found dead on May 13, 2013.

She has become a role model and true inspiration for women across all fields and divisions. Her story is of courage and determination and gives a fresh hope to billion of women across the country. Shanti Tigga taught a lesson of hope, determination, leadership and dedication.

Woman in armed forces have to face challenges like getting recruited in permanent commission. Traditionally women were allowed to join the Army as non combat units, like education, legal, ordinance, engineering, signals, intelligence. However these roles were in the capacity of short service commission (SSC) Officers and the woman can work in these roles for a maximum of 14 years. It is only in the medical stream as doctor or nurses and dentists that woman have been getting permanent role.

The second challenge is providing psychological support and counselling. The role in army in combative and non combative forces is challenging and they might feel alone and misguided. So a proper counselling can help woman.

The third challenge is need of social support which is often neglected. Providing social respect may be motivating and inspiring for woman. Lack of motivation and encouragement to woman is also a great challenge. Women in armed force have to face these challenges and struggles.

Tigga joined Railways in 2006 on compensatory ground after her husband passed away. She was posted at Chalsa station in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. She learned about the Territorial; Army Railways and volunteered for it. Tigga was a mother of two children when she joined the Army as the first female jawan. Some of her relatives were in armed forces and that motivated her to become a part of the Army. Tigga prepared hard to clear the physical test. She cleared the test and got selected and became the first woman to join the TA as jawan.

Shanti Tigga is an inspiration and role model for many women across the country as she broke the barriers and stereotypes and through her hard work  and perseverance  succeeded in becoming the first female Indian jawan in TA. She was 3 and a mother of two when she made history by joining Indian Army.Tigga teaches through her life that hard work and determination can lead you to success. No barrier is a barrier and even a impossible looking barrier can be broken with perseverance and hard work. Shanti Tigga faced challenges but she pursued to achieve success in life. She has taught women across country to work hard and achieve dreams. Her life is an inspiration of common women who achieved success through hard work.    Traditionally women were allowed to join Army as non –combat units, only Shanti Tigga      became the first woman in India who broke the barrier and joined as female jawan in            Indian Army. Since the early 1990, women have been serving indifferent departments of        the Army such as education, legal, ordinance, engineering, signals, intelligence, air traffic     control.

 The SSC role had an advantage that women could leave after 14 years and be with the     and enjoy social life. She could also serve in any other job in which she could be with the     family. The disadvantage of SSC role is if the women want to serve the Army she cannot     continue and has to leave after a period of 14 years. Even though women are willing they     have no choice to continue. These are the advantages and disadvantages of SSC role in     which women were recruited earlier.
